Light Painting Workshops in the UK – A Unique Creative Experience

At Tsp Studios Photography, I’ve been photographing and leading light painting workshops in Oldham and across the UK for many years. In fact, I believe I may be the only photographer in the country specialising in documenting and delivering dedicated light painting workshop experiences in this way. I have given light painting workshops/experiences for many large companies including DLA Piper, the BBC, La Coste and Manchester Art gallery to name only a few

Light painting photography is more than just long exposure images — it’s about community, creativity, experimentation, and storytelling with light. Every workshop is different, shaped by the people who take part and the energy they bring to the night.

What Is Light Painting Photography?

Light painting is a long-exposure photography technique where handheld light sources are used to “paint” within a frame. Using torches, LEDs, wire wool, custom tools, and sometimes experimental modifiers, we create:

  • Abstract light trails
  • Illuminated portraits
  • Architectural interventions
  • Large-scale collaborative artworks

The camera records what the human eye can’t see in real time. The result? Striking, dynamic images that feel part science, part performance, part art installation.

Oldham Illuminate – A Highlight of the Year

It’s always a pleasure to be involved in Oldham Illuminate, a vibrant annual light festival celebrating creativity across the borough.

Hosted in Oldham, the event transforms public spaces into glowing canvases of colour and imagination. My workshops during Illuminate invite the public to step beyond being spectators — and become creators.

There’s something powerful about watching participants of all ages see their first successful long exposure appear on the large screen in the gallery. That moment of surprise never gets old, there are always lots of ‘Ooohs and Ahhh’s’. I never really know what is going to appear, it’s often just as much a surprise for me.

Why Light Painting Workshops Matter

Over the years, I’ve seen these workshops:

  • Build confidence in beginners
  • Inspire young creatives
  • Reignite passion in experienced photographers
  • Bring communities together after dark in safe, creative spaces

In a world saturated with instant smartphone imagery, light painting slows things down. Picaso was amongst the first people to light paint, there’s no tricks, just photographic technique and creativity.

As someone born and raised in Oldham, it’s particularly meaningful to contribute creatively to the town’s cultural life. Events like Illuminate demonstrate how photography and public art can transform perceptions of place.

My Approach at Tsp Studios

With over 30 years’ experience as a creative photographer, my approach combines:

  • Technical expertise in long exposure photography
  • Professional lighting knowledge
  • Safe workshop management
  • A strong emphasis on inclusion and participation
  • Live demonstration and hands-on learning

Participants don’t just watch — they actively create images that surprise them.

Looking Ahead

Light painting continues to evolve. Each year brings new tools, new techniques, and new audiences. I remain passionate about pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with nothing more than darkness, time, and controlled light.

If you’re interested in future light painting workshops in Oldham or Greater Manchester, or would like to collaborate on a festival or community event, Tsp Studios would love to hear from you.
