Light Painting After Dark: Creative Freedom at a Wellness Retreat & Gallery Recognition at Oldham
As a specialist in light painting photography, I often find myself working to meet client briefs—creating tailored, eye-catching images that capture vehicles, people, places, logos and advertising campaigns. But recently, I had the rare pleasure of photographing for three days at Moore Life wellness retreat (what a great job that was!), where the peaceful nights offered something more: time to create just for the sake of it. It’s not something I do enough of these days and Ive got plans to do more in the next few weeks.
Unplugged and Inspired: Light Painting in Nature
Away from the usual demands of client work, I was able to step back and reconnect with the original thrill that drew me to light painting. With no brief, no restrictions—just darkness, space, time and some new light painting tools—I explored new techniques and compositions. The retreat’s natural surroundings became the perfect canvas. Trees, paths, and open fields and even a mini stone henge.
From the Darkness to the Gallery Walls: The Lights at Gallery Oldham
In another exciting development, I’m proud to be exhibiting at Gallery Oldham’s “The Lights” show—alongside none other than Tracey Emin, Martin Creed and Noel Clueit,. It’s a genuine honour to have my light painting work displayed in such a respected space, especially in my hometown of Oldham. The exhibition explores themes of illumination and expression, and my contribution brings a dynamic, photographic perspective to the mix.
Seeing my work in the gallery setting, paired with iconic artists, is both humbling and energising.
Final Thoughts
These past weeks have been a powerful reminder of what’s possible when creativity is given room to breathe. From solo experiments at night to sharing wall space with renowned artists, light painting continues to be an evolving journey. Whether it’s through commercial work, fine art, or spontaneous moments of inspiration, I’m grateful for every opportunity to let the light lead the way. I have been light painting for over 20 years and it appears that right now it’s very popular. This might be due to its use in some very high profile advertising. Toward the end of last year I worked for a large fibre optics/telecommunications company who are rolling out in the midland, I’m looking forward to seeing those image being used.
